Rogelio Funes Mori will leave CF Monterrey this winter transfer window after eight seasons with the club. The 32-year-old will join Pumas UNAM on a two-year contract to remain in Mexico.

Additionally, Rayados will reportedly receive $3 million from Pumas for a player whose contract ended in June. As a result, the club secures funds and begins to turn the page.

Rayados didn’t want to extend Rogelio Funes Mori?

Sporting president José Antonio Noriega did speak at a press conference on Friday. He revealed that the board had no intention of extending Funes Mori past his current contract.

Monterrey opened the doors for him to be able to take an alternative path, which Funes Mori decided when he communicated on Friday that the Argentine was taking the offer from the Pumas.

“Everything has its cycle,” Noriega told reporters (h/t Telediario). “In a conversation with Rogelio’s agent a few weeks ago, after the tournament ended, knowing that he has six months left on his contract, the conversation turned towards whether we wanted to renew it. I told him that it was not the intention, that he had a place in the club, but there were still six months left on his contract, and the conversation opened up to that possibility – if there was an option, we would let him go.

“Because it’s Rogelio, we were accommodating. He has given a lot to the club and the club to Rogelio. Various opportunities arose, Rogelio considered them, and we left the door open. Today, Rogelio informed us that with this background and the openness to let him go if he found an alternative that attracted him, he would take it.”
