Nico Sánchez standing on the sidelines

Newly appointed Monterrey manager Fernando ‘Tano’ Ortiz added a familiar face to his coaching staff as the club announced that former defender Nico Sánchez has been named an institutional assistant.

Sánchez was the manager for Raya2 in the Liga de Expansion, to which he led his first and only Liguilla in the Clausura 2023. However, with the team now being defunct, it allowed the Argentine to be available for another coaching position.

The former Rayados captain will take over the institutional assistant role from Aldo De Nigris, who left the Mexican club after the sacking of Víctor Manuel Vucetich.

It will be interesting to see if Sánchez voices his opinion regarding the future of Rogelio Funes Mori. The 37-year-old played alongside Monterrey’s all-time leading goal scorer.

When Ortiz arrived in Monterrey on Sunday, one of the first questions he responded to was the future of Funes Mori.

“Rogelio is an emblematic player of the institution and during the week, I will surely speak with him to see what intention there is to be able to move forward and for him to make the best decision,” Ortiz told reporters.

“He is a player who is in the squad; he is an element of the institution.”

Ortiz’s coaching staff is taking shape and now it will be the roster that many fans want to see change after a disappointing exit from the 2023 Clausura Liguilla semifinals.
