Johan Rojas was one of CF Monterrey’s transfer signings this summer, and while the 21-year-old arrived to the Mexican club without much cache to his name, he’s off to a good start.

Rojas came into the contest between Rayados and Club Querétaro in the second half and scored his first goal with Monterrey off of an assist from fellow Colombian Stefan Medina.

Former Rayados and current Atlético Nacional star Edwin Cardona spoke with Once Diario and had high expectations for Rojas in this new adventure with Monterrey.

“I faced him about a year ago, and he really impressed us,” Cardona said. “I didn’t know him well, I didn’t have him identified, and after such a long time coming back to Colombian football, he had an outstanding game that day.

“I told him to play seriously because in the end, I saw what he could be as a player… He’s going to add a lot to Rayados.”

Moreover, Cardona relayed his experience during his three years with Rayados to Rojas and advised him to embrace playing in the city.

“The only thing I told him was to enjoy and not stop doing so, that he was going to join a wonderful team and a great city,” Cardona added. “I watched him play here and he really liked what he did, and when someone leaves their country, sometimes people don’t like it when you are happy on the pitch, but that’s how he is.

“He needs to understand the responsibility that comes with being in Monterrey, as it is a club that demands a lot due to its greatness and will give him a lot because of the quality player he is.”

If Rojas can live up to his potential, the young Colombian’s stint with Monterrey could be short as the winger is probably using the Mexican side as a catapult to a potential move to Europe.
