CF Monterrey’s Jordi Cortizo is currently with the Mexican national team during this FIFA international break. The 27-year-old has parlayed his excellent start with Rayados this Apertura 2023 season into a couple of call-ups for Jaime Lozano.

Cortizo understands that, just like playing for Rayados, he and other players must take advantage of their opportunities. Looking ahead to the 2024 Copa América, these friendlies and Concacaf Nations League Quarterfinals are crucial for Cortizo. These matches could allow him to secure a spot on Lozano’s squad.

“From day one, [Jaime Lozano] has been very clear, and here everyone comes to be a starter,” Cortizo said before the contest against Ghana (h/t ABC Deportes). “We are one of the best in the clubs and we have to take advantage of the opportunities.

“We always want to make leaps in quality, and what better than on this FIFA date to compete against two teams? We are clear about what we should do, and it is a nice opportunity to show ourselves and why we are here …

“There are important players and those with experience add a lot and what they transmit to us is important and we are many young people looking for a place and we all want to be on that list for a World Cup that will be in Mexico.”

Mexico picked up a 2-0 win over Ghana, with Cortizo remaining on the bench. Still, there’s the contest against Germany on Tuesday that the Rayados star will undoubtedly want to participate in.

Rayados remain atop of Concacaf

Monterrey remains the best team in Concacaf, again appearing at the top of the confederation’s team rankings. Five months after the creation of this concept in the area, Rayados stands out with 1,247 points.

The MLS teams dominating Leagues Cup 2023 by taking the first three places. Nonetheless, it’s the Mexican teams have the highest positions in the rankings. After Rayados, América, Tigres, Toluca, and Club León make up the top 5 of Concacaf. Following them are Philadelphia, Chivas, Pachuca, Nashville, and Atlas, closing the top 10.
