CF Monterrey striker Germán Berterame is of interest to MLS side Portland Timbers. The American club has reportedly offered $15 million for the player, but they’re paying that amount for a reason.

RG La Deportiva’s Santiago Fourcade confirmed the reporting and added more details to the transfer saga. Portland has put $15 million on the table because that’s the clause in Berterame’s contract.

As a result, Rayados would have no say in a departure if the clause is triggered. Nonetheless, Fourcade adds that Monterrey has already told the Argentine they want him to continue with the club. However, it won’t stop a hypothetical exit.

Both clubs are waiting for the player’s decision as Berterame’s decision to leave the club and join the Timbers would be more economical (salary, etc.) than sporting.

The 25-year-old’s departure would be a significant blow to the team, considering they’re in two competitions. Having Berterame and Brandon Vazquez in the striker role to rotate is a luxury other teams won’t have.
