The Portland Timbers are not only looking to land Club America forward ‘Cabecita’ Rodríguez as those rumors remain ongoing. They’re also eyeing another Liga MX player, CF Monterrey striker Germán Berterame.
Furthermore, the MLS side is willing to spend a lot of money on the player, which will likely have the Rayados front office debating. Transfer window specialist César Luis Merlo reported on Saturday that Portland is offering $15 million for the Argentine.
Merlo adds that negotiations are already underway with the Monterrey for the player. However, there is still no agreement between the two clubs.
If Monterrey were only competing in one competition, the decision is likely a no-brainer considering the amount. However, the Mexican side is in two competitions and having Berterame and Brandon Vazquez in the striker role to rotate is a luxury other teams won’t have.
Additionally, if Vazquez were to get hurt, it would leave the No. 9 responsibilities to Rodrigo Aguirre. The Uruguayan has underperformed during his time with Rayados, so needing to count on him isn’t ideal. Nonetheless, it’s a large sum that Monterrey can infuse into their summer transfer budget for some serious spending.
It will be interesting to see what the club decides to do, but it’s not an easy decision.
