Sergio Canales’ time with La Roja is over, but he did win a UEFA Nations League before wrapping up his international career. As a result, the CF Monterrey star will watch the 2024 UEFA Euros this summer from home, rooting for his compatriots.

In an interview with MARCA, the Rayados midfielder noted who he believes is the best Spanish player currently playing. The 33-year-old stated that, in his opinion, Manchester City midfielder Rodri holds the title of the best Spanish footballer.

“There’s a very high level, not only people who are constantly being called up now but also with players who have the possibility to go,” Canales told the outlet. “A super good, super healthy group is forming again. The last time I went, I enjoyed the group that was there very much, the mentality, the feeling of being.

“There are top players who are winning everything, like Rodri, for example, who, for me, is the best Spanish player there is right now in the world. There are those kinds of players who can give you that quality leap to be able to win, which you often need.

“The path is very good, with players like Dani Olmo as well, who in the end also needs others to win certain types of matches. There’s a very good foundation, with players who can make a significant leap.”

Spain is embarking on a fresh chapter with coach Luis de la Fuente, who assumed the role from Luis Enrique. The 53-year-old departed after the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and claiming the Nations League trophy is commendable. Still, the Spanish team’s performance in the Euros will be the primary yardstick for evaluation.
