On Sunday, CF Monterrey announced the exit of Rogelio Funes Mori. The Rayados’ all-time goal scorer will leave the club after eight years. He will be moving on to join PUMAS UNAM on a reported two-year contract.
Additionally, reports suggest Monterrey will receive $3 million for the Argentine striker. Funes Mori bid farewell to Rayados through social media rather than a press conference. The 32-year-old mentioned in the interview that he harbors no resentment because he always gave his all for the blue and white jersey.
Rogelio Funes Mori reflects on his Rayados tenure
“I will always be grateful. This club believed in me at a time when perhaps I wasn’t known here in Mexico, where, yes, maybe I came under a lot of criticism, but I never paid attention to all that,” Funes Mori said (h/t Telediario).
“I think I knew it was a significant opportunity for me, for myself, and for my family, and with hard work and dedication, as I’ve said, I believe I was able to overcome, achieve significant things, and win titles. I would have liked to win more titles, but that’s football.
“I think sometimes it gives and sometimes it takes away from you. I’m not going to blame myself for anything because I always gave it my all for this shirt. I will miss you a lot because this is my home, and I will always support you from outside.”
Rayados has already attempted to improve the striker position with the looming arrival of former FC Cincinnati striker Brandon Vazquez. The Mexican-American striker is already in the city and likely must undergo medical testing to finalize his contract.
The Athletic reported that Monterrey and Cincinnati have agreed to a deal of approximately $7.5 million, with the potential for an additional $1 million in add-ons and the inclusion of a sell-on clause
