CF Monterrey have yet to count on the contributions from their marquee signing of the summer, Óliver Torres. Rayados have played four matches to start the 2024 Apertura season with three wins and one draw, although the squad is coming under criticism for their style.
On Friday, Torres appeared on RG La Deportiva, and one of the topics that the former Sevilla star discussed was the role he intends to play on the team.
“I’ve watched [Rayados’ matches], analyzed them, and I see myself as the link between the defense and the attack,” Torres said (h/t Once Diario). “I want to make sure we have different positions in the midfield, that the ball flows more smoothly, and reaches the attack with greater clarity.”
Torres will share the midfielder role with Sergio Canales as they look to be the heart of the squad. During the same interview, he noted that his compatriot has played a significant role in helping him adapt to his new team and city.
“I faced Canales many times, but we didn’t have a personal relationship,” Torres added. “Before we met, when I was talking with Rayados, he helped me a lot in finding a house and adapting. I’ve noticed that he’s a reference point for the team. He’s a player whose actions make it easier to be that guide. I’ll have to join him in helping out.
“More important than anything is that we understand what Rayados means, what we are looking for, and what they expect from us. Sergio understood perfectly what the club was asking for, why the club signed him, and we need to help him make that group stronger.”
The 29-year-old is expected to be able to play in the League Cup, but there’s no indication whether that first game will be on July 30th against Austin FC or August 3rd against Pumas UNAM.
