Monterrey is reportedly on the verge of a significant coup with the potential signing of Real Betis star Sergio Canales.

FOX Sports Mexico’s Sergio Treviño Cantú reported on Wednesday that Canales will join the Liga MX side. The 32-year-old is at the heart of Real Betis’ offense as their attacking midfielder.

Canales scored six goals and three assists in 42 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga side in 2022-23. As for the potential transfer fee, BeSoccer Betis reports that the transfer operation could be closed at approximately $15 million.

With the potential signing of Canales, Monterrey aims to strengthen its squad and elevate its status domestically and internationally. If the transfer goes through, Rayados will count on the Spaniard to win the league title this 2023 Apertura season.

Furthermore, the northern Mexican club might expect to have him for the upcoming Leagues Cup this summer. While the tournament is a divisive subject, it would allow Canales to get his feet under manager Fernando Ortiz.

If the deal goes through as expected, Canales will become one of the highest-profile signings in Mexican football.
