CF Monterrey Star Credits Aston Villa’s Unai Emery for Career Influence

CF Monterrey star Sergio Canales has had many coaches during his career. At 33, the Rayados star reflected on those who helped him grow as a player. Over the years, he’s played for various top managers, such as Jose Mourinho and Manuel Pellegrini.

In a recent interview with MARCA, Canales was asked which coach has left a significant mark on his career. The veteran midfielder noted that of all the coaches he’s had, revealing a couple of names.

“Among them, one who stood out to me is Unai Emery,” Canales told the outlet. “A very complete coach who squeezes the best performance out of any player. Also, [Ernesto] Valverde, and, above all, the one who marked me the most despite the short time I spent with him, is Imanol Alguacil from Real Sociedad.

“I coincided with him for practically six months. However, I loved it—his way of managing the dressing room, demanding, approaching each game, and getting the most out of players. Then, obviously, because of the success in the Copa del Rey, Manuel Pellegrini is ultimately a coach I am grateful to for the trust he always gave me. Winning that cup with Betis is important.”

Canales is signed with Monterrey for three seasons to be a focal point in the squad. It will be interesting to see if Fernando Ortiz or another manager leaves a good mark on his career. This move to Mexico marks a new experience, so any coach who helped him might be up for consideration.
