CF Monterrey officially announced their No. 10 on Monday with the transfer of Sergio Canales. The 32-year-old will head to Mexico from Real Betis and be the magician in the Rayados midfield.

Transfer window specialist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Real Betis is receiving €10 million in a fixed fee with €7 million in variables. Additionally, Canales will sign a three-year contract to begin his venture with LIGA MX club.

Monterrey’s newest signing spoke with TUDN after saying goodbye to Real Betis at a press conference. Canales noted that he’s eager to start with this new challenge ahead of him.

“In the end, many times, it’s a bit of expectation, but you have to show it,” Canales told TUDN. “A very nice challenge lies ahead in one of the best moments of my career. Prepared for anything, eager to adapt quickly, help the team and get to know them.

“The forces with which I have started each project of my career, I feel stronger than ever in that sense, with beautiful goals to achieve in a football that in the end is unknown in my country and that I want it to come and see and enjoy it.”

Furthermore, Canales adds that Rayados supporters remind him of those who support Real Betis, highlighting each fanbase’s passion. While it may not be the sole reason he came, Canales might feel comfortable.

“[Rayados has] incredible fans who follow the team a lot,” Canales continued. “The truth is that I can’t wait to make my debut. I’m here with a lot of desire and to achieve everything we set out to do. They have a great squad and I’m sure we’re going to achieve great things.”

The Mexican club now hopes that Canales can be the player that generates offense from the midfield. Monterrey is investing a lot of money in the 2022 Copa del Rey winner. As a result, they’re hoping he plays a vital role in leading the squad to the 2023 Apertura title.
