Johan Rojas Opens Up About Playing Alongside His ‘Idol’ at Monterrey

Ahead of the 2024 Leagues Cup, CF Monterrey’s Johan Rojas scored his first goal with the club in the 2-1 win over Club Queretaro on July 20. The 21-year-old also spoke about playing alongside fellow Colombian Stefan Medina.

Medina is one of the veterans on the team and has the longest tenure on the squad. Moreover, it was the 32-year-old who provided the assist on the Rojas goal. The youngster spoke with the media last Thursday and noted how Medina was an idol of his while watching Atlético Nacional.

“I tell him all the time that he was my idol when he played for Nacional because he is ten years older than me,” Rojas said last Thursday (h/t TUDN). “When he played for Nacional, my dad would take me to see him, and I keep telling him that he is my idol, that he was a reference for me when I followed him at Atlético Nacional.”

Furthermore, Rojas revealed that Medina predicted that the forward would score in the contest against Queretaro. However, the Rayados defender might not have foreseen himself being the one who provided the assist on the Rojas goal for a Colombian connection.

“The first thing he said was that I would score,” Rojas said. “When the match was over we hugged each other and he told me that he had it in mind, that he had visualised it. When we got up, the first thing he said was: ‘Today you’ll score, today you’ll score’; and so it was.'”

Rojas has a chance to further solidify himself into the team during this Leagues Cup tournament as Monterrey face MLS side Austin FC on Tuesday.
