This past Saturday, CF Monterrey announced that they have extended the contract of Víctor Guzmán until 2028. However, the question surrounding this extension is what happens to the defender’s prospects of leaving for Europe.
Mexico is in a crisis because there are not many players in Europe, and the 22-year-old defender has the potential to leave and test his capabilities abroad. Despite the extension, Guzmán made it clear in his interview with ABC Deportes that his desire is to eventually leave to play in Europe.
“I have my goals very clear; I want to play in Europe,” Guzmán said. “I don’t know what will happen; they can tell you tomorrow you’re leaving or you’re leaving in three years.
“Over time things happen, situations that make you make decisions, but I’m very happy here, if I have to stay I’m very happy, but something I would like to happen is that I would like to win something with Rayados before I leave.”
Guzmán will have opportunities to catch the attention of scouts from European clubs as he’ll be playing in Leagues Cup this summer, the domestic competitions, the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup, and the 2025 Club World Cup. If he continues his good form, it’s hard to envision him being at Monterrey past next summer.
The last player to leave Rayados was César Montes in 2022, so Monterrey could soon be sending another defender to Europe. Playing for a European team would boost Guzmán’s chances of playing for Mexico at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
