Fernando Ortiz Reacts to Estadio Azteca Boos, Draw Against Club America

CF Monterrey manager Fernando Ortiz was back at the Estadio Azteca since leaving his position as Club America manager last year. Rayados and America played to a tightly contested 1-1 draw on Saturday night. After the game, the Argentine was asked about the reception he received.

Despite winning the Apertura 2023 tournament, fans of the Mexico City-based club let Ortiz know how they felt about him as they rained on him with boos. Although the treatment was harsh, Ortiz understands why the fanbase reacted that way toward him.

“I have said it; I am grateful to this institution,” Ortiz told reporters (h/t TUDN). “It allowed me to coach in the First Division and the best team in Mexico. I have not forgotten my appreciation for this institution. I will never go against the fans; I respect them. I am grateful, but nothing will ever come out of my mouth against this institution.”

Regarding the tight match in which both teams could have won, Ortiz commented that the result doesn’t bother them, as they remain undefeated and at the top of the Liga MX standings.

“The reality indicates that it was a hard-fought, beautiful, intense match,” Ortiz added. “Although both teams had chances to win, América dominated the first half, and we dominated the second. We could have won or lost; everything remains the same at the top, so it’s a good result for us.”
