From Rayados to El Tri? Germán Berterame Talks Potential National Team Move

After obtaining Mexican citizenship, Julian Quiñones of Club América received an immediate call-up to join the national team. However, he may not be the only one, as CF Monterrey’s Germán Berterame is another name to watch.

The 25-year-old Argentine is undergoing the naturalization process to become a Mexican citizen. In 2024, he aims to join the Mexican National Team, which Jaime Lozano currently manages.

“We are still dealing with the paperwork issues,” Berterame told ESPN (h/t ABC Deportes). “Obviously. I believe that the quicker the papers are, I will try to do my best to be able to naturalize, and then, it is a matter of the coaching staff and the people of the National Team wanting to summon me. But, well, I will be willing to accept what they think.”

Furthermore, the Rayados goal-scorer revealed that Duilio Davino, sports director of the senior men’s team, asked him to begin the naturalization process.

“[Davino] sent me a message and told me, and I wanted too, that’s why I agreed to want to naturalize,” Berterame added. “But, well, obviously, the citations they make, I think, are also the coaching staff’s responsibility. So, as I say, I will be willing. And once I have all the naturalization, it depends on whether I take it or not.”

Monterrey has already been down this road with Rogelio Funes Mori, who became a Mexican citizen. Eventually, he was called up to the national team. Nonetheless, whether it was the manager or tactics, it wasn’t a success. Will Berterame be different? Only time will tell if he does suit up for El Tri
