CF Monterrey holds a 4-1 aggregate lead over Comunicaciones FC heading into the second leg on Thursday night at Estadio BBVA. If Rayados advance, their Concacaf Champions Round of 16 opponent could be Brando Vazquez’s former club, FC Cincinnati.
Cincinnati will begin their Round One matchup next week when they face Jamaican side Cavalier SC. The MLS club is the favorite, so should they advance, it sets up for an intriguing two legs.
Matt Miazga recently spoke with 90min’s Lizzy Becherano about the possibility of facing Vazquez and Monterrey.
“Of course, I told him, ‘I’ll see you soon, bro,'” Miazga told Becherano. “So, I mean, ideally, we could play each other. Yeah. So it’ll be. It’ll be funny. I never played against him, like, you know, as an opposition, we do it in training all the time, but it’s different in training than a, you know, full-on game. So I think that’ll be a good [and] exciting test for the both of us.”
Last month, The Athletic, citing sources, reported that the agreement between Monterrey and Cincinnati is set at around $7.5 million, with an additional $1 million possible in add-ons and a sell-on clause included.
