Brandon Vázquez has hit the ground running with CF Monterrey. The 25-year-old has scored three goals in three matches after switching from FC Cincinnati this past winter transfer window.
Nonetheless, the United States national has a busy 2024 with the Concacaf Nations League and the Copa América this summer. As a result, can Vázquez perform well enough to garner a look from manager Gregg Berhalter?
Fox Soccer reporter Doug McIntyre appeared on the “Alexi Lalas’ State of the Union” podcast. He notes that, for now, it’s tough to envision the Rayados striker receiving a call-up from Berhalter.
“I’m not convinced that Gregg Berhalter, the US coach, is going to look at the goals he scores in that league and really be moved by them,” McIntyre said.
“I mean, this is a guy who, in 2022, had 18 goals in MLS, a joint top American scorer in MLS, along with Jesus Ferreira, and he couldn’t get a sniff. I mean, he wasn’t called in for any of the pre-World Cup camps, let alone the World Cup roster.”
However, McIntyre did note that if Vazquez continues this form and scores goals in important matches, it would be hard for Berhalter to ignore his production to earn a call-up.
“I mean, look, if he scores enough, at some point, you become impossible to ignore [he can earn a call-up],” McIntyre added. “And I hope that’s what happens. I really like Vázquez as a player. He brings something different stylistically than any of the other options.”
