Newly appointed Monterrey manager Fernando ‘Tano’ Ortiz spoke with reporters after arriving in the city. One of the questions that the 45-year-old answered was about the future of striker Rogelio Funes Mori.
Funes Mori’s name is in the rumor mill as reports link him to a possible move away from Rayados. A move to Pumas UNAM had rung loudly, but it appears all the smoke had been for nothing.
Nonetheless, Ortiz told the media that he’d have a conversation with the 32-year-old goal scorer to determine his future.
“Rogelio is an emblematic player of the institution and during the week, I will surely speak with him to see what intention there is to be able to move forward and for him to make the best decision,” Ortiz told reporters at Monterrey International Airport (h/t ESPN).
“He is a player who is in the squad; he is an element of the institution.”
TyC Sports’ César Luis Merlo reported on Sunday that Funes Mori does not want to leave the club unless asked. Merlo also revealed on Friday that Pumas boss Antonio ‘Turco’ Mohamed wants the veteran striker to join him in Mexico City.
However, another club residing in Mexico’s capital city, Cruz Azul, is also reported in the mix for Funes Mori. It will be challenging if Monterrey moves on from their all-time leading goal scorer because the player has a high salary with the Monterrey team.
