Tano Ortiz Praises Monterrey’s ‘Courage’ After Dramatic Draw Against Tigres

CF Monterrey pulled out a come-from-behind 3-3 draw against Tigres UANL in the latest installment of the Clásico Regio. Fernando ‘Tano’ Ortiz spoke postgame and congratulated his players after the result that ended a two-game losing streak.

Tigres opened the scoring in the first minute thanks to a goal from Juan Brunetta. Luis Romo leveled the scoring in the eighth minute and after a couple of goals in the early minutes, the contest settled down.

However, Fernando Gorriarán would give Tigres a 2-1 lead heading into halftime, and then Brunetta scored his brace in the 46th minute. There was still plenty of time for Rayados to turn the situation around as Gerardo Arteaga made it 3-2 in the 61st minute.

Monterrey waited until the final minute of second-half stoppage time to level the scoring 3-3, thanks to a goal from Germán Berterame, for the dramatic draw. Afterward, Ortiz praised his players for their resilience.

“I want to congratulate my players, not only those who played but also those who didn’t get the chance to play and those who were left out of the squad,” Ortiz told reporters (h/t TUDN). “I want to publicly congratulate them for the game they have achieved.”

Tano Ortiz: Monterrey showed guts in the draw against Tigres

Ortiz spoke about the justice that can exist in football, acknowledging the effort and dedication of his players to salvage a point from a seemingly lost match against their fierce rival.

“Sometimes football has its own justice,” Ortiz added. “It’s when a team strives, plays better, seeks victory, and at the moment when you’re either starting or finishing, or even beginning anew, there’s a psychological impact, and it hits hard.

“That’s why I began like that because these players achieved that score with the courage to reach it. That’s why I have and maintain that I have some very intelligent players, with a lot of guts.”
