Germán Berterame Rejects Portland Timbers’ Lucrative Offer; Transfer Saga Not Over

On Wednesday, the Germán Berterame transfer saga took another twist as the Portland Timbers encountered a significant hurdle in pursuing the CF Monterrey player.

Initial reports came out last weekend suggesting that the MLS side was preparing to pay his $15 million release clause. Nonetheless, transfer window specialist César Luis Merlo reported the latest on whether the Argentine will move to the United States.

According to Merlo, Berterame wants to remain with Monterrey despite the lucrative offer from Portland. Furthermore, he has already informed the club’s board of directors of his position.

One reason the 25-year-old rejected the Timbers’ offer was his desire to become a naturalized citizen of Mexico and possibly play for the Mexican national team. However, Portland will make one last attempt to convince the forward to continue his career in MLS.

It’s interesting to wonder what Portland’s thought process is. Could the club be encouraged in talks with Berterame that they believe a better offer can entice him to leave? The Timbers’ season is already underway, so they likely want a player now and don’t want to drag out the process.

Despite Berterame’s rejection, the saga isn’t over. Monterrey will hope that whatever second offer comes his way, their striker will refuse their proposal.
