Germán Berterame Transfer: Why Monterrey Star Could Reject Portland Timbers

Last weekend, reports uncovered that the Portland Timbers made a $15 million offer for CF Monterrey striker Germán Berterame. If the MLS side goes ahead with this payment, it will activate the Argentine’s release clause, and both parties will need to figure out the next steps.

Berterame might find the offer tempting due to its economic benefits, but he faces a difficult decision. He might choose not to join Portland because of his ambition to compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

If the Argentine decides to take the Timbers’ offer, he will say goodbye to the process of becoming a Mexican citizen.

TUDN reported on Tuesday that Berterame is nearing the five uninterrupted years required by FIFA to be eligible to receive his naturalization papers. These five years will be completed in July 2024, just four months away.

If he joins the Portland Timbers, Berterame would bid farewell to the possibility of going to the Mexican National Team. The Rayados star has already held discussions with Duilio Davino and Jaime Lozano over coming aboard.

Berterame’s departure saga continues as a Wednesday deadline looms to decide his future. Despite this, the player joined the team on their trip to the United States. Monterrey will face FC Cincinnati in the first leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 tie.
