Hugo González Reveals Why He Returned to Monterrey for a Second Stint

Hugo González is a controversial figure for CF Monterrey supporters because of how the Mexican goalkeeper performed during his two stints.

The 33-year-old recently talked about why he returned to Monterrey after losing the Final Regia in 2017 to Tigres UANL once his loan stint with Necaxa ended.

In the “Porteros TV” podcast, the current goalkeeper of Mazatlán explained that several Liga MX clubs approached him when his loan contract with Rayos was about to expire. However, Rayados refused to sell him.

“Things were going really well for me at Necaxa,” González said (h/t Telediario). “I had six months left on my loan, and Necaxa wanted to buy me. However, the people at Monterrey didn’t want to sell me because the ‘Turco’ was asking for me back.

“I was approached by Chivas, Pumas, and someone from another team up north. However, there was always that part where Monterrey wanted me to return.”

Hugo González: ‘Give me a chance to go somewhere else’

The veteran shot-stopper mentioned that he didn’t understand why they wanted him back if, after the Final Regia of the Apertura 2017, people would always boo him whenever he played at Estadio BBVA.

“I was saying, ‘How am I going to go back to a place where I’m not wanted? [Rayados management] want me, but there’s another part that doesn’t,” González added.

“Give me a chance to go somewhere else. You’ll get rid of a problem, and so will I.’ But it wasn’t up to me. Negotiations begin, contract renewal. You know that what Monterrey offers you is difficult for another team to compete with.
