Fernando Ortiz Confident in Medical Staff; Plus, Rayados Injury Update

The injuries keep piling up for CF Monterrey after their 3-1 win over FC Juárez on Saturday at BBVA Stadium. Last week, Rayados announced the surgery Sergio Canales underwent, and it seems the injury bug decided to strike again.

Monterrey didn’t have one or two, but three players were injured. Víctor Guzmán and Stefan Medina didn’t play the full 90 minutes and needed to be substituted. Meanwhile, Jesús “Tecatito” Corona also left at the 66th-minute mark.

As a result, questions are being asked about the preparations, training sessions, and treatment the players receive, considering the injuries continue to pile up. Nonetheless, manager Fernando Ortiz expressed his confidence in the staff.

“Worried, they are atypical injuries within a short distance or time of what we are working on,” Ortiz told reporters postgame (h/t Telediario). “What happened to Stefan was a blow to the Achilles tendon. What happened to Guzmán was that the opponent fell on him.

“Things happen like that. They are a spur of the moment. I do not doubt the work of the medical staff and the physical trainer.”

No international duty for Víctor Guzmán and Stefan Medina

The injuries come at a terrible time for Guzmán and Medina, as both were slated to join their respective national teams during this FIFA international break. Guzmán had been called up to play for Mexico; meanwhile, Medina would join Colombia for their World Cup qualifiers.

Both players will be evaluated when Monterrey returns to training in El Barrial as they begin their rehabilitation during the break and see if they make it to the duel against UNAM Pumas on Oct. 22. If Rayados cannot count on their two defenders, it puts the squad in even more trouble.
