Monterrey’s Tony Leone Looks to Walk César Montes’ Path to Success

CF Monterrey hopes Tony Leone will emulate the success of Víctor Guzmán and César Montes. Both players established themselves as top-quality center-backs with promising prospects in European football.

Presently, Montes is playing in La Liga with Almería. Meanwhile, Guzmán has the potential to make a move abroad. Rayados introduced Leone to the media in Monterrey as their newest recruit.

The 19-year-old expressed his desire to follow in the footsteps of Montes by playing for Monterrey and then potentially making a move to Europe.

“César is a national team player,” Leone told reporters (h/t Medio Tiempo). “He’s a good person, very skilled with the ball, intelligent, tall, [and] well-endowed; we know he had a promising career here, which allowed him to go to Europe, and I will try to follow that path.

“There are very good players [and] I am young, and I have to work for my place. I like to work hard to earn that spot [and] I will have to prove myself to earn the position. I was at LAFC for three years, [and] I didn’t play much; it was difficult. Everyone there knows what Rayados is, and that’s why they decided to come to Rayados.”

Leone is under contract with Monterrey until 2027 after arriving from Los Angeles Football Club. He joined the team on a free transfer and will serve as a backup to Guzmán in the right center-back position.
