CF Monterrey will travel to Mexico City this weekend to clash with the reigning Liga MX champions, Club América. Both squads are atop the table and are strong contenders to win the 2024 Clausura tournament.
The trip to the Estadio Azteca will be the first time Rayados manager Fernando Ortiz returns to the stadium he once called home. Ortiz managed América from 2022 to 2023.
After Monterrey defeated Atlético de San Luis 3-1 on Saturday night at Estadio BBVA, Ortiz spoke with reporters and commented on what it means to play against his former club. Furthermore, the Argentine elaborated on the mindset he wants his squad to have.
“[Monterrey] will face a rival who is the current champion,” Ortiz told members of the media (h/t Diario AS). “We will go to the Azteca to play the game that we want to play.
“We are not going to stop being the team we have been looking for since the first four dates. Yes, obviously, it will be respected like every rival. We play from home and away, but we are going to play our game.”
