The injury bug continues to hit CF Monterrey. Rayados walked away with a 1-0 win over Pumas UNAM on Sunday at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario. However, the three points came at a cost.
Jordi Cortizo, arguably Monterrey’s best player this 2023 Apertura season, suffered a broken collarbone early in the first half against Pumas. The injury likely puts him out for the entire tournament. Nonetheless, the 27-year-old remains hopeful that he can make a quick recovery.
“It’s in the clavicle,” Cortizo said (h/t TeleDiario). “I don’t know exactly yet. We have to check it. I hope I can recover as quickly as possible. When [we have] information the club will give the medical report, let’s give it all the effort and give it a try. It’s an honor to be part of this team and see how it represents all of us.”
Rayados have six more games left before the start of the Liguilla, which they should qualify for. Still, with the players racking up injuries, it will be challenging to reach the finish line. As a result, while the win over Pumas came at the cost of more players picking up injuries, Cortizo was happy with the three points.
“Very proud of the team,” Cortizo added. “It was a very complicated game, and what a pride that my teammates showed off like this.
“The only thing I wanted was the three points, which could be given after how the game turned out, but hey, they are things that happen right now. I have no information. I have to get checked, and let’s hope that everything is for a speedy recovery.”
