Monterrey’s Versatile Defender Draws Interest from Brazil, Colombia, and MLS

CF Monterrey crashed out in the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal to Columbus Crew, losing 5-2 on aggregate. As a result, the future of certain players are now in the spotlight.

One veteran player who could be on the way out is defender Stefan Medina. According to Colombian commentator Carlos Antonio Vélez, the versatile defender already has a closed agreement with a team in Colombia to return to his home country.

Although Vélez didn’t mention Atlético Nacional, Medina’s boyhood club, the speculation is that it’s an agreement with the Medellín-based team. Furthermore, Fernando Esquivel from 365scores reports that the 31-year-old, who will turn 32 in June, draws interest from several leagues.

According to Esquivel, Monterrey have indeed received contacts for the player, not only from Colombia but also from MLS and Brazil.

Furthermore, following the team’s elimination from the Champions Cup at the hands of the Crew, the internal situation is tense. Any player departures – including Medina – won’t be considered until the local playoff competition concludes as Monterrey will face Tigres UANL in the Liguilla quarterfinals.
