Rayados’ Víctor Guzmán Returns to Training with Mexico After Injury Scare

Rayados supporters held their breath when Víctor Guzmán left the Mexico national team’s friendly against Guatemala with an injury. However, it seems Monterrey manager Fernando ‘Tano’ Ortiz was right about it being a scare.

“Thank God what happened to Víctor Guzmán was just a scare,” Ortiz said in a recent interview with TUDN (h/t El Norte). “If Diego Cocca wants to send it to me and I treat [him] here, thankful to Diego.”

The national team’s Twitter account uploaded a clip of Diego Cocca’s squad’s training session. In the video, there was a Guzmán partaking in practice. As a result, the 21-year-old might have indeed suffered a scare.

Guzmán and Mexico are preparing for their Concacaf Nations League semifinal against the United States on Thursday at Allegiant Stadium. Seeing the young central defender practice is a welcomed sight for Monterrey.

Former Rayados defender César Montes commands the right center-back position, so barring anything unforeseen, Guzmán will be the backup. However, if the Monterrey defender could see action in the Gold Cup, which begins on June 25 for Mexico as part of the group stage.

Mexico is in Group B with Haiti, Honduras, and Qatar.
